The option to turn off all imposters is used to visualize the underlying geometry, and should not be left switched off when modeling.

Select all instances of a node is useful, as often when re-rendering imposters you need to select the node that has all the child branches hanging off it. Selecting all the instances allows you then to go into the selection dialogue box, display with hierarchy, select the node with children, and re-render the imposters.
